Vanguard has recently expanded its local ETF lineup with the launch of three new offerings in global tech and international high yield:

  • Vanguard Global Technology Index ETF (ASX: VTEK)
  • Vanguard Global Technology Index (Hedged) ETF (ASX: VTKH), a currency hedged version of VTEK
  • Vanguard International Shares High Yield ETF (ASX: VIHY)

This article will be looking at the Vanguard Global Technology Index ETF VTEK. The fund is not currently covered by Morningstar, but it represents an interesting development for a provider that has traditionally avoided thematic or sector‑specific products.

Vanguard Global Technology Index ETF VTEK

Methodology

Priced at 0.23% p.a., VTEK tracks the FTSE All‑World Technology 300 Capped Net Tax Index. This benchmark selects 300 of the largest technology companies from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series. Eligibility is determined using the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB), which groups companies based on their primary business activities.

Composition

A key feature of the index is its 20% cap on individual holdings. But even with that constraint, the portfolio presents as top-heavy. NVIDIA, Apple and Microsoft together account for close to 40% of the index and the top ten holdings comprise almost 70% of total portfolio weight. However, this perhaps reflects the scale and market dominance of the tech's largest companies, rather than an explicit flaw in the methodology.

The index's risk‑adjusted performance is also worth noting. Over a five-year period, the benchmark recorded an annualised return of 17.9% against an annualised volatility of 18.8%. producing a return‑to‑risk ratio of 0.9 as seen in the table below.

This means investors were compensated for the higher level of volatility they experienced over the period. Given the younger age of the index, these figures are based on back‑tested data rather than live performance. Despite that, it reflects a reasonably favourable trade‑off between risk and reward compared to the broader tech sector.

How does this fit into a portfolio?

A core-satellite approach is a portfolio construction strategy that involves picking ‘core' funds that form the building block of your portfolio around which to construct the ‘satellites'. These core funds are your low-cost, vanilla options that track major markets, provide broad diversification and have minimal turnover. The purpose of this allocation is to anchor your portfolio towards consistent long-term growth.

On the other hand, satellite holdings are tactical, conviction-based positions used to bolster your overall returns or achieve another investing goal. They are often more volatile and in riskier or niche sectors. Given their nature, these should only comprise a small portion of your portfolio but essentially form ‘play money' to invest in opportunities without putting your broader investment goals at risk.

Vanguard has traditionally avoided niche themes with a preference for broad-based, low cost core funds. VTEK is a thematic ETF and therefore intended as a satellite allocation e.g. something that is added to an already-diversified portfolio.

Because the ETF invests entirely in global equities and carries unhedged currency exposure, it is most likely suitable for investors who are seeking long‑term growth, can tolerate higher levels of volatility and the possibility of significant drawdowns. Vanguard frames the fund as appropriate for buy‑and‑hold investors who want exposure to global technology leaders and are comfortable with the risks inherent in both equity markets and foreign currency movements.
