The new Covid-19 variant, B.1.1.529, detected in South Africa is mainly affecting people in the under 25 age group, among whom the vaccination rate against the virus is only 26%, according to health officials. The South African news outlet reported that with Gauteng emerging as the epicenter of the fourth wave of the pandemic once again, it’s no surprise that the province has recorded the most number of infections from the B.1.1.529 variant.

India allows international flights; bars 14 countries including UK, Singapore

In a good news for fliers planning their international leisure trips during the year-end, the government has allowed regular international flights for several countries from December 14, 2021, barring 14 that includes the UK, a few European countries and New Zealand. Sources said that regular international flights have been allowed from all countries barring 14 countries. The countries that have been exempted from the list include the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, South Africa, Brazil, China, Mauritius, New Zealand and Singapore. “A decision on exempting countries has been taken by the health ministry based on the level of threat in light of the new COVID strain as well as rising infection rates in these countries.” Other countries in the list are Bangladesh, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Lt Governor Anil Baijal will chair a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), on 29th November. The meeting will inter alia discuss the situation and preparation in the wake of new variant B.1.1.529.

Hong Kong reports 4 new imported COVID-19 cases

Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported four new imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday, taking the total tally to 12,421. Three of the cases involved mutant strains while the mutation test result of the remaining case is pending. A total of 40 cases have been reported in the past 14 days in Hong Kong.
